I offer 1-1 coaching for engineering managers and software developers. If you're interested in further developing your career, moving from IC to management position, or your team struggles and you want to help them, I'll be happy to work with you. Drop me an email at gregory@notonlycode.org or read on to see why you should consider hiring me.

Why coaching

Over the last few years I've been working as an engineering leader for a number of organizations. A lot of them offer little support in career development. Companies give their employees $1000 annual education budget and call it an "employee career growth strategy". Money is only part of the problem, but the employees often don't know how to use it best, what skills they should focus on in order to progress in their career. What the employees need is not money, but attention and expertise that will allow them to unlock their potential.

1-1 coaching is an effective way to work through challenges at work and to understand what to do in order to make the most out of your career. Coaching is a collaborative process that helps individuals identify and overcome obstacles, set achievable goals, and develop skills and strategies to improve their performance, and ultimately help them achieve success at work. Through regular 1-1 sessions, I help my clients to understand what they should focus on in order to progress further in their career. And through one-off sessions I help clients to deal with a specific problem or a situation that has been troubling them.

My experience

I spent the last 14 years working in the tech industry, first as a software developer, and for the last 6 years as a manager (managing both individual contributors and other managers). I know the problems tech employees deal with, because I faced the same problems for years. I had bad managers, I had difficult colleagues, and at times I was a difficult colleague that had to change.

For the last 3 years I've been working with developers and engineering managers to help them progress in their careers. I've written a number of articles, I've created over 50 videos, and I've run 100+ mentoring sessions via platforms like Plato. Currently I'm working via regular sessions (once every 2-4 weeks) and one-off sessions, depending on the clients' needs.

Who do I work with

I primarily work with Engineering Managers and developers who want to move to management. In particular, I can help you if you are:

  • a new Engineering Manager struggling with your responsibilities
  • a seasoned EM who faces some particularly challenging issues at work
  • a manager who has just started leading other managers
  • a senior developer who wants to become a tech lead, EM, or a principal engineer

I also occasionally work with less experienced developers or people who want to change careers and transition to tech.
